SPOKANE RIVER CLEANUP - Coming again in 2007! 
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Join the Spokane community to clean up the Great River Gorge! Please register to volunteer at the October 7th Spokane River Clean-Up. It’s quick and easy to register groups and individuals. Click HERE. Pre-registration helps organizers to anticipate the needs of the group and assures adequate supplies are available. All walk-ins are also welcome.
Spokane’s 4th annual River Clean-Up event is scheduled for October 7, 2006, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at High Bridge Park. Partnering in the event are Kendall Yards, Avista Utilities, Friends of the Falls, and the City of Spokane.
In 2005, 525 volunteers removed over 9 tons of litter from the riverbanks. This year organizers are building a river awareness component into the event by including informational and interactive booths in High Bridge Park.
Throughout the day there will be information booths, children's activities, food vendors, and music from DJ Michael Moonbear of KYRS radio till 3 pm. There will also be door prizes for the most interesting garbage item(s) collected and a raffle. You could be the lucky winner of a day pack or tent from Mountain Goat Outfitters.
At the River Clean Up everyone’s a winner – volunteers each receive a free knapsack at registration as our thanks to you. It’s handy for carrying the few items you’ll want to have along at the Clean-Up. The knapsack comes packed with two pairs of protective latex gloves, plastic bags for trash and recyclables, and a 16 oz bottle of water. You may wish to bring your own heavier gloves, though, and some extra water.
Volunteers are advised to dress appropriately for the work to be done and the rugged terrain along the banks of the river. It can be chilly in the morning, then warmer in the afternoon, so bring a light jacket or sweatshirt and wear long pants. Be sure to wear supportive shoes with some tread to avoid slips and falls.
Think about getting to High Bridge Park by foot, bike, or bus. Volunteers are encouraged to use alternative transportation, as parking is limited and our event is growing. To catch an STA bus to the event, check the schedule for Bus #20 North Loop at www.spokanetransit.com/spokanetransit/ or call 328-RIDE. Please consider parking at the arena or at Spokane Falls Community College , and catch a bus to the event.
For those riding a bike, a staffed, secure bike corral will be available at the park.
Returning volunteers might be wondering about the free lunch that was provided in years prior. While there won’t be a free soup lunch, there will be vendors offering reasonably priced lunch fare sure to satisfy: pizza, New York-style hotdogs, wrap sandwiches, ice cream and espressos. Many of the vendors have already agreed to give a portion of the proceeds to benefit local charities including Friends of the Falls. Alternatively, you might pack a picnic lunch to enjoy in the park. We’ve got our fingers crossed for a beautiful early autumn day with friends.
