SPOKANE RIVER FEST
Join your friends and neighbors on Saturday June 10 from 10 am to 4 pm at High Bridge
Park and surrounding parklands for the 2nd annual Spokane RiverFest,
a new and exciting community celebration of the importance of the Spokane
River to the ecology, culture, and economy of Spokane.
Spokane RiverFest was organized by the Inland
Northwest Trails Coalition to celebrate the
Spokane River as the center of our community and to highlight the
Great Spokane River Gorge Project
and activate public support for master plan
projects. Spokane RiverFest will be held on June 10 in High Bridge
Park and surrounds.
Activities will include a program that will
feature music by Ruby Dee and the Snakehandlers and speakers at High Bridge
Park. Educational and recreational activities especially for children
will take place throughout the day, and there will be an
opportunity to sign up for work projects in
the Gorge.
Activities will also include Wild Walls climbing wall, kayak demonstrations,
fly fishing demonstrations, bike demonstrations including Cycling the Bridges sponsored by Group Health and lots of children's outdoor activities. Commercial and informational displays will be
open in High Bridge Park throughout the day.
Multi-cultural events will include cultural displays by the Spokane
Tribe and Native American music and dancing.
The Inland Northwest Trails coalition was formed in 2004 to promote
the Inland Northwest as a premium non-motorized recreation destination
while creating a viable active transportation system for our residents;
to protect and promote the Inland Northwest's trails, waterways, and
recreational destinations; and to preserve and create viable natural
habitat and trail corridors.
The Great Gorge Project is a collaborative effort led by the Friends
of the Falls to protect and restore Spokane Falls and the Spokane River
gorge below the falls. The vision statement for the Great Gorge Project
is "Spokane's many cultures, as collaborative caretakers, honor
and protect the Great Spokane River Gorge as our gateway to understanding
the unique cultural, historical, geological, and spiritual significance
of our region. This is accomplished through education, access, and
enlightened interaction of people and the natural environment." The
Great Spokane River Gorge Strategic Master Plan was developed as a
guide for this process.
